Our Syndicate
The Year 7 and 8 syndicate is designed to create a strong sense of belonging, both socially and academically, while fostering unity within the wider school community.
Most core classes take place in the dedicated Year 7 and 8 area, which includes a shared common learning space. Students also have access to a designated playground for their year group. Pastoral care is a key focus, supported by the homeroom teacher, whanau teacher, and the Year 7 and 8 Dean. The syndicate prioritises high expectations, academic progress, and student well-being, ensuring that every learner is supported in their achievements and that success is recognised and celebrated.
Otamatea offers a variety of Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) experiences, for the Year 7 and 8 students, with many opportunities throughout the year. These include a range of sporting events through various sports, the Bream Bay Exchange, Mathex Competition, Kids' Lit Quiz, and more. The Year 7s begin the year with an on-site overnight camp at our local marae, and later in the year, they take part in a careers exploration and local walk. The year concludes with Activities Week, where both Year 7 and 8 students participate in a variety of fun experiences outside of school.
A big plus in being part of a secondary school is that students have teachers who are experts in their field for each curriculum area.

As part of a secondary school, our students have the advantage of having access to equipment and tools which they will continue to use throughout their schooling. It is particularly advantageous for our students to experience science in the lab.
