Tena Koutou Katoa

This week I thought I would share with you my assembly speech to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori week.

Nau mai, haere mai ki tēnei hui whakahirahira. Welcome, everyone, to this important occasion as we come together to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week - and reflect on the significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our school and community.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori gives us a chance to honor and embrace Te Reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa. This week is not just about learning and using the language - it is about celebrating the deep cultural heritage and the connections we all share through the values and traditions of tangata whenua. I encourage everyone - students, staff, and whānau - to engage with Te Reo, whether it's by using a new phrase, greeting one another in Māori, or exploring the rich history and stories embedded in the language. Every step, no matter how small, contributes to the revitalization of Te Reo Māori, ensuring it flourishes for generations to come.

Our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi also lies at the heart of our school’s vision and values. Te Tiriti speaks to partnership, protection, and participation. It reminds us that we must work together as equals, fostering an environment of mutual respect, where the voices and knowledge of Māori are recognized and valued alongside all other cultures represented here. As a school, we aim to embody these principles every day, making sure that Māori students are thriving, that Māori perspectives are included in our curriculum, and that we all benefit from a bicultural approach to education.

Te Tiriti is not just a historical document - it is a living agreement that guides us as we navigate the present and future of our school. It reminds us of our responsibilities to each other and to this land. I am proud of how we, as a school community, are embracing these responsibilities. Our ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion, and our efforts to reflect the spirit of Te Tiriti in our teaching, learning, and everyday interactions, are things we should all take pride in.

As we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, let it also be a reminder of the promise of Te Tiriti o Waitangi: a promise of a shared future, where diversity is celebrated, and every individual’s contribution is valued.

Kia kaha Te Reo Māori! Let’s continue to strengthen the language and the partnerships that define who we are as a school and as a nation.

Thank you all for your support and participation.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Under 15’s Sevens Rugby

On Wednesday 18th September the Otamatea High School Under 15’s Rugby Sevens travelled to Kerikeri leaving early at 7.15am. We competed in a Northland wide Under 15 rugby sevens tournament. In our first game we had a good win against Bream Bay followed by two losses against very good teams from Kerikeri High and Whangarei Boys High. Our last game was a playoff for 5th and 6th place against Kamo High School. The boys played their best game of the day and officially narrowly lost, but there was some controversy due to a change in referee mid game and confusion over the score. Most had the score as a draw. Nevertheless, regardless of the score the boys were rightly proud of their performance and had a great day. Thanks to O’Shana Crane-Lima who came along as manager/assistant coach.

Players: Nikau Phillips, Luca Troost, Cordell Smith, John Howse, Cyprus Tumata, Jack McNamara, Feinda Garton, William Kemara, Donovan Legge, Jakob Buxton

Market Day a Roaring Success

Students from both Level 1 and Year 10 Commerce worked hard for days in the lead up, organising ingredients, arranging stall decorations and prepping their products. When Wednesday, September the 11th rolled around, students arrived early, setting everything up ready for the onslaught of shoppers. It wouldn't be an event without a few snags, and extra staff and students jumping in to give us a hand. When the bell for interval went at 11am, very quickly there was no room to move in the hall, with lines for every stall.

Mrs Harrison and Mrs Baker would like to thank all the staff, students and their whānau who contributed to making market day such a success. The preparation and execution of a day like this isn't possible without many hands, and it was fantastic to see so many students able to get involved.

Inter-Iwi Chess

The inter-iwi chess / whaikingi  tournament took place over 3 days this week. The library was packed, the excitement was high and the play was fierce. This year it was held as a round-robin tournament which meant that every iwi played each other -  with a total of 24 games being played. Games were matched as much as possible by ability which allowed for better games and more student participation. Some players played more than one game if there was no other iwi member available. Each game had a ten minute limit, with each player having a 5 minute clock. Some games were unfortunately lost over the time expiry, which showed we had even balance of ability in the games.  Points were awarded for the win, loss and draw.  We had lots of spectators and support which really helped to make the event - thank you.

A range of ages and year groups played, with several keen Y7's, notably Rohan Hartles who won his second game, and Ciara-Lee Steel. The Senior's Max Bull,  Allistair Martin, Noah Martin, Ashton Naylor and Matai Hartles were constants every day to show their support even if they didn't play. The Y9's represented their iwi's well and the most players with Angel Teves, Heath Lineham, Connor Green, Caleb Laurence-Goss, Elliot Hartles, Matthew Laurence-Goss, Tyler Lorenzen, Khai Donaldson, Ava Morrison, Chloe Henley, Daisy Winters, and Brooklyn Hemera . Other players included Teo Gibbons, Avarn Ajodani, Kacy Gillon, James & Jackson Wintle, Shaka Kimani, Jordan Edlin and Liam Rozema.

Scores Were:
Winner : 1:   Arawa :        20 points              2:  Maniapoto :  16 points
               3:  Whatua :       6 points
               4:  Ngapuhi :      4 points

Clocks and Boards are always available in the library, with Tuesday being the chess club day.  There is also a rating system being work out with a variety of students playing  " official rating games"  before school. The results of this week's games will go towards the leaderboard.

Visual arts subjects will submit work for external standards on the following dates.
