Tena Koutou Katoa
I have been getting out and about this week meeting students and visiting teachers in their classrooms. I have been really impressed with the high number of students who take their learning seriously and the high level of care that our teachers show.
I was lucky enough to see a number of our sports teams play in the Quad tournament last Friday. The students were highly competitive and represented their school with pride. Winning the overall tournament was a great bonus as well!
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the Reporoa exchange students good luck.
At assembly this week I talked about four life skills that require zero talent to achieve.
being teachable
being on time
having a strong work ethic
having a positive attitude
If you could follow up at home, about how these things can make a massive difference to what our students achieve at school and in life, that would be awesome.
Todd Malcolm
Principal
The ball will be held September 14 at school. Tickets are $90 and went on sale to Year 12 and year 13 students this week. From Monday tickets will also be available for year 11 students to purchase.
If you are a Year 13 student and wish to bring a partner that does not attend Otamatea, you must complete an outside partner approval form which are available from the front office.

Planning is going well for the Year 9 and 10 work experience day. A few families have already filled in the Google form on this link. Examples of workplaces are a vet, landscaping
company, airport and chocolate factory. Workers being shadowed include a primary school teacher, a carpenter and a mechanic.
This 5 minute video shows the benefits of work experience for further studies, career choices and even opportunities for part-time work. We are very excited about this day and the opportunities parents are organising for their students. Please get in contact with your learner’s whānau teacher if you have any questions.
The pictures are from one of last year’s students who learnt about traditional healing methods, first collecting kawakawa leaves and then applying them to a sore leg.

Well done to the Year 7 and two Year 8 teams who competed at the 2024 Northland Mathex competition on Tuesday. Such a great way to display problem-solving techniques and demonstrate resilience.

As part of their preparation for the AIMS tournament next month, our year 7 & 8 boys rugby 7's team headed up to Kerikeri this week to compete in the north zone 7's tournament. It was great for the team to be able to put everything they've been practising into some real game time. We were one of 13 teams, and probably one of the smallest in size, but this didn't stop the boys putting in some great performances. Their first match was against Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe, after a slow start the boys got right back into what was a physical game, but going down 27-19. Their second match was against Matauri Bay, the boys really got it together for this game playing really well as a team and winning this 41-5. The third and final match was against Okaihau, this was a tightly fought contest that created a lot of enthusiastic support from the sideline, everyone was very excited to win that game 15-12.
With just over 4 weeks until the team heads off to the AIMS Games, the boys are putting in a great effort with their weekly trainings, and also have their last big fundraiser underway, a raffle with $4000 worth of prizes and 14 chances to win. Please see below what prizes can be won, and the awesome local businesses who have supported this raffle. If you would like to support the AIMS team and have a chance to win one of these fantastic prizes please email helen.anderson@otamatea.school.nz

A successful finish to our first ever season in the Harbour Schools Senior A competition. After going through the regular season unbeaten and winning our semi-final against Long Bay, we faced Westlake Senior A in the final.
It was a tight first half with both teams trading buckets. In the third quarter we stepped on the gas and built a lead that would prove too tough to catch.
Some excellent defense from Kayla, Georgia, Trinity and Anahera led to easy buckets on the offensive end.
On the attacking end Anahera led with 27 points using a variety of attacking moves to score in the paint. Georgia demonstrated her improving skills scoring 14 and Jade got hot in the 2nd half scoring a bunch of mid range jumpers to bag 12.
All the girls played their part and the fact we have 6 of our players still in year 9/10 bodes well for the future.
Big thank you to our sponsors, parents, coaches Karina and Blake, manager Toni, and Tina Holst at Ota working behind the scenes to make things happen.
Final season record: 12 wins, no losses.

Could ALL DOE students (past students) and their families please have a thorough look at home for any compasses, pots, cooker tops, raincoats, backpacks or any other gear borrowed from the school for DOE adventurous journeys over the years.
If any is found, can you please return it to the school office, as we have other groups needing to use the gear.
Thankyou,
Robyn Bruce
